CareerBuilder Challenge Odds & Betting Preview

The PGA Tour heads back to the mainland after a brief Hawaii swing when the CareerBuilder Challenge gets underway this weekend at the PGA West Stadium Course in La Quinta, California.

According to Bovada, Jon Rahm is the +800 favorite, with Brian Harman (+1400), Kevin Kisner (+1800), Patrick Reed (+1800), Webb Simpson (+1800), Phil Mickelson (+2200), Jason Dufner (+2500), Brendan Steele (+2800), Patton Kizzire (+2800) and Zach Johnson (+2800) right behind him.

Five of the FedExCup’s current top 10 and five of the top 30 in the world rankings will be in attendance in the Golden State. For the first time in six years, two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson is heading back to the California desert, where he shared runner-up honors at the CareerBuilder Challenge in 2010. Watson is listed at +5000 to emerge triumphant.

It makes sense to see Rahm as the favorite due to the Spaniard’s recent dominance. Rahm has top-two finishes in his past two starts, with a runner-up placement at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and a win in the European Tour finale. This tournament hasn’t been kind to Euros, however, with 13 of the last 14 CareerBuilder Challenge winners being American-born. The lone exception was Venezuela native Jhonattan Vegas in 2011.

The TPC Stadium Course at PGA West is a 7,113-yard par 72 widely regarded as one of the tour’s toughest venues. The course was unveiled at the 1986 Skins Game, as course designer Pete Dye littered the landscape with deep bunkers, pushed-up greens and plenty of water holes.

Last year’s champion Hudson Swafford, who’s a relative long shot at +5000 odds, will be looking to go back to back at the event. Swafford claimed the hardware thanks to birdies in three of his final four holes on Sunday to overtake Adam Hadwin and Bud Cauley, earning his first tour victory.
