Which NBA Head Coach Will be Fired First in 2017-18?

It only took three games for the first coaching casualty of the NBA season, as the Phoenix Suns decided to part ways with Earl Watson after a nightmare start that included a pair of 40-point blowout losses. With Watson now looking for work, sportsbooks are offering odds on which bench boss will get the ax next.

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry is the +275 favorite to get canned, with Jeff Hornacek (+300), Doc Rivers (+500), Frank Vogel (+550), Fred Hoiberg (+600), Dave Joerger (+750), Brett Brown (+1000), Mike Budenholzer (+1000), Dwane Casey (+1500) and Michael Malone (+1500) also available to wager on.

Watson went just 33-85 during his stint as the Suns coach. His only full season came in 2016-17, when the team posted a 24-58 record.

As of this writing, the Pelicans were sitting in 12th place in the Western Conference at 2-3 SU, but Gentry has been on the hot seat in the bayou for quite a while. Currently in his third season as the Pelicans coach, Gentry won just 30 and 34 games during his first and second campaigns, respectively. New Orleans finished 45-37 and made the playoffs before he took over, but they’ve failed to make the leap into a contending team under Gentry.

The volatile Knicks are always good for some turmoil, so a wager on Hornacek at +300 isn’t a bad idea. New York is off to an 0-3 start in the post-Carmelo Anthony era and is not expected to sniff the playoffs in 2017-18. It’s the same old Knicks, and Phil Jackson isn’t around to take the heat anymore, which means Hornacek’s job security could come into question sooner rather than later if the losses keep piling up.
