WNBA Futures: Lynx Remain The Team To Beat

With an 11-1 record through their first 12 games, the Minnesota Lynx have continued to prove they are the best team in the WNBA. Not only do the Lynx own the WNBA’s best scoring offense, they also possess the best scoring defense in the league.

Minnesota may also be home to the best player in the WNBA, as Sylvia Fowles continues to dominate. The four-time all-star is second in points, rebounds and blocks per game and paces the league in field-goal percentage. Though there is plenty of talent on the Lynx, Fowles is the key to Lynx success, as the team’s lone loss saw the center tally her fewest points and rebounds in a game this year.

The Washington Mystics sit atop the Eastern Conference and hold the best odds of any team in that half of the league. However, their once comfortable lead in the East has dwindled considerably with the team going just 2-3 SU in the past five. Lack of scoring depth has been an issue for the Mystics, with the bench averaging just 26.8 points while shooting 42.9 percent.

The Mystics’ recent issues have allowed the New York Liberty to slowly climb up the Eastern standings, as Bill Laimbeer and company sit just 0.5 games back. Much like the Lynx, the Liberty are carried by their star center Tina Charles. The New York native is third in the WNBA in points and rebounds while leading the team in scoring in eight of 12 contests.

Here we are again, the Minnesota Lynx are proving themselves to be the best team in the WNBA – and it’s not even close. After a month into the season, the Lynx are 9-0 with the best scoring offense and defense in the entire league. The bigs of the Lynx are steamrolling opponents with Sylvia Folwes and Rebekkah Brunson averaging a combined 33.6 points, and 17.3 rebounds per game while shooting 61.8 percent from the field.

Long and short, it looks like the Lynx are well on their way to their seventh consecutive 22-plus-win season.

The second-best odds to be the last team standing belong to the reigning champion Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks sit second in the Western Conference but have already shown some real vulnerability on the road going 2-3 away from Staples Center. LA’s offense is rolling averaging 86.0 ppg while shooting a league-high 48 percent from the floor but their middling defense has sunk them on several occasions.

The Washington Mystics still hold the best odds for any team out of the Eastern Conference, as they hold the second-best record in the WNBA. Much like the Sparks, the Mystics can score with the best of them but they have still yet to settle in defensively after an offseason full of change.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but the Minnesota Lynx appear to be the best team in the WNBA. The Lynx have opened the season 3-0 and have the very early favorite to win the MVP in Sylvia Fowles. How anyone is going to stop Fowles down low befuddles me, as the 31-year-old is averaging 21.7 points and 10.0 rebounds while shooting 57.5 percent from the floor so far this season.

Of course, the biggest obstacle in front of the Lynx comes from the only other undefeated team in the WNBA: the Los Angeles Sparks. The reigning WNBA champions have bulldozed their first two opponents of the season, both by 10 points, behind the dominant offensive effort from Nneka Ogwumike.

You have quite some time to wait before these two teams battle it out on the court, as the Western Conference powerhouses don’t play one another until July 6.

Despite opening the season 1-2, the Washington Mystics have the best odds of any team in the Eastern Conference to win it all. Both of the Mystics’ losses have come on the road and one of those was against the Sparks. After revamping the lineup during the offseason, it is going to take time for Washington to likely mesh fully. However, Elena Delle Donne is still a scoring machine and Kristi Toliver continues to be one of the best 3-point shooters in the league.

After finishing last year as the last team standing, the Los Angeles Sparks will enter the 2017 WNBA season as the favorites to win the championship once again.

Of course, the core remains strong for the Sparks with Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike patrolling the frontcourt. The biggest adjustment will come at the guard position, as Kristi Toliver signed a free-agent deal with Washington during the offseason. LA looked to counter this loss ahead of the WNBA draft when they acquired Odyssey Sims to join the starting five. Sims was the top player for the lowly Dallas Wings last season but she doesn’t bring the same 3-point shooting that Toliver offers.

You can’t talk about the WNBA championship without talking about the Minnesota Lynx. The Lynx have been the class of the WNBA recently, as the team has appeared in five of the past six finals. Minnesota will return basically the entire team that finished in the top three in the league in every major offensive and defensive category last season. If anything, the team looked to bolster its bench depth with the signing of 13-year veteran Plenette Pierson.

If you’re looking for the most intriguing team to watch, it’s going to be the Washington Mystics. After finishing last in the Eastern Conference last season, the Mystics aggressively tried to fix the issues during the offseason. Washington acquired arguably the best player in the WNBA when they traded for Elena Delle Donne. As previously mentioned, the Mystics also signed Toliver during the offseason.
